From October till October 24, GST authorities found Rs. 1.51 trillion in tax evasion.
The Finance Ministry shared data with Parliament that indicated the Goods and Services Tax (GST) authorities had discovered approximately Rs 1.51 lakh crore in tax evasion through October of the 2023–24 fiscal year, with Maharashtra, Haryana, and Gujarat having the highest rates of evasion. The ministry also stated that 71 show cause notices had been issued to online gaming companies for alleged GST evasion of over Rs 1.12 lakh crore during the fiscal years 2022–23 and 2023–24.
In the meantime, another reply from Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed that under its special drive, the GST authorities found 21,791 non-existent entities and Rs 24,010 crore in tax evasion. Of the 21,791 entities whose GST registrations were found to be non-existent, 10,399 belonged to CBIC jurisdiction and 11392 to state tax jurisdiction. State authorities found Rs 8,805 crore in tax evasion, while central authorities found Rs 15,205 crore.
154 people were arrested for the entire Rs 1.51 lakh crore in GST evasion that central GST officials found during the current fiscal year (until October 2023). The government reported that Rs 18,541 crore has been recovered so far this fiscal year.
