National Awards to Bhakra Dam and to Sh. D.K. Sharma, Chairman, BBMB
Chandigarh: Bhakra Dam, the Iconic Multipurpose Project of India was dedicated to the nation on 22 October, 1963. This Dam is continuously supplying around 16,000 Million Cubic Meter of water and 6500 Million Units of energy annually to its partner states for meeting their Irrigation, Power and Drinking water requirements for more than 54 years. Two power houses of Bhakra Dam on left and right banks of the river contributes 1379 MW of power in the Northern Grid besides playing an important role of supplying “Black Start Power” in the event of Grid Collapse. The Hon’ble Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy on its study visit to Bhakra Dam in June, 2017 highly appreciated the operation and maintenance of this gigantic Multipurpose Project – Bhakra Dam.
Keeping in view outstanding maintenance and operation of the Project and its service to the nation, Central Board of Irrigation and Power (CBIP) based on recommendations of the high level jury has awarded the most prestigious National Level Award to ‘Bhakra Dam’, the Temple of Modern India, as “Best Maintained Project (Functional for more than 50 years)” to BBMB. Bhakra Dam was selected due to its robust health, ensured by rigorously following detailed documented maintenance schedules, round the clock vigil and by using latest technology and material for its upkeep & repairs under the dynamic leadership of Chairman, BBMB.
The citation reads, “Best Maintained Project (Functional for more than 50 years) presented to Bhakra Beas Management Board for Bhakra Dam for excellent maintenance of Dam and related Water Conductor System to ensure reliable supply of water and electricity to the beneficiary by maintaining 100% availability”.
Sh. D.K. Sharma, Chairman, BBMB has also been given national level award for “CBIP Special Recognition Award for Exceptional Leadership and Contribution to the Indian Water and Power Sectors”.
Both these awards were received by Sh. D.K. Sharma, Chairman, BBMB from Dr. Satya Pal Singh, Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation, Govt. of India on 3rd January, 2018 in the award ceremony held at New Delhi.
Chairman, BBMB thanked the dedicated team of employees, technicians and engineers for their untiring efforts and congratulated them for this achievement.
